Glycemic Index and Diabetes
What do the glycemic index and diabetes have to do with each other? Good question...
The glycemic index has been shown to be a good tool to help people lose weight and keep their blood sugar in a healthy range. What does that mean? Well, it means a lot!
This has the potential to do all of the following:
- Assist with losing weight to reduce the risks associated with obesity such as heart disease and high blood pressure
- Help to keep people from reaching the stage of early diabetes (pre diabetes)
- Possibly reverse early diabetes which would prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes
- Manage blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetics, possibly reducing the risks of complications that may be caused by the disease
The glycemic index is an indicator that measures and ranks foods and the impact they have on your blood sugar levels. High glycemic foods raise your blood sugar level rapidly and low glycemic foods raise your blood sugar level slowly.
Nobody can argue that managing blood sugar levels is important to keep diabetes under control. Eating healthy foods that don't spike your blood sugar is a great way to start.
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there have been several medium to long-term studies that showed positive clinical findings when using the glycemic index with diabetics.
A Swedish study showed that a lower glycemic diet was "user friendly" and easier to folllow than a more typical diebetic diet. This study even showed improved HbA1c results in children with type 1 diabetes.
